Seminar "The Russian presence in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Do the wise, the good, and the eternal" is taken place on September 1, 2012 in the lecture hall of the Peter and Paul fortress (St. Petersburg).
A one-day seminar is dedicated to the Russian presence in the Asia-Pacific Region (APR), in particular, in such little-known countries like Japan, Australia, the Philippines, etc. It is organized by the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg and the Information and Cultural Centre "Russian emigration".
The seminar will focus on the important initiatives that were originally laid by immigrants from Russia and later earned the fruitful development of culture and science of a number of Pacific Rim countries.
The workshop is not accidentally held within the exhibition of the Russian painter, art critic and translator Barbara Bubnova. More than 30 years of her life she lived in Japan (from 1922 to 1958). Here Bubnova seriously and enthusiastically engaged in lithography and became the most famous lithographer of the country. She taught Russian literature at Waseda University and the Institute of Foreign Languages in Tokyo, in Hokkaido University. She translated and illustrated classics into Japanese and Russian (Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy). The life and activities of this remarkable woman may serve as a vivid example of fruitful interaction and mutual influence of Japanese and Russian cultures.
