Information technology and libraries: A system of scientific search through the holdings of the theses of the Russian State Library

In the framework of the annual meeting of the heads of the federal and central libraries of the Russian Federation the Fund for Small Enterprises in the scientific and technical field, and the Russian State Library presented a joint project for the development of scientific research information on the Library's theses of the RSL. The technical executor of the project, the “Electronic Archive” Corporation, has created the first and only Russian IT-tool to work with scientific information.

The developed system involves the ability to search in English, Russian and Ukrainian languages ​​in eleven disciplines, and the semantic dictionaries unite more than 600,000 scientific terms. Russian product is not inferior to the functional characteristics of international scientific search platform as Science Research Portal and Scirus, and not only allows you to search for relevant topics, but also to analyze and synthesize data from a variety of scientific fields.

The Director of the Russian State Library A. I. Visly said: "The ultimate goal of the project is available search through the Library's holdings of theses of the RSL for Internet users around the world. Also by the end of this year we plan to digitize 20 000 items of scientific and educational literature and in the future to create a similar search engine on this foundation".

The prototype of the system of scientific research information in the digital library of theses of the RSL became the platform, implemented to create electronic fund of documentation for International Nuclear Information System at the IAEA. The platform is designed to be a powerful tool to help the development of Russian research capacity and preserve the accumulated scientific knowledge.
