Society and culture: The book-illustrative exhibition “In other words: theory and practice of translation” in Saint-Petersburg

September 28, 2015 in the Korf hall of the National Library of Russia (St. Petersburg) on ​​the eve of the International Day of the translator (September 30) is opened a book exhibition "In other words: theory and practice of translation".

The exhibition tells the history of translation and the different kinds of art and special - religious, military, legal, diplomatic, scientific.

The exposition presents unique examples of translated books from the collections of NLR. This is a The Code of 1649, known as the Code of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich - the first systematic body of law in Russia's history, based on a translation of the Byzantine law (edition 1809).

Of particular interest is the book, brought up a generation of Russian people, "Book of Lives of the Saints" or menology saint, preacher, writer, poet, playwright and translator, Metropolitan Dmitry Rostovsky (1759 edition). The author translated sources in Greek and Latin.

One section of the exhibition is devoted to the books "Assembly, to translate foreign books on the Russian language", created in 1768. During the 15 years of its existence "Collection" published 112 works in 173 volumes of Russian readers acquainted with the masterpieces of world literature.

Visitors will see the publication of outstanding interpreters of the classics.

The exhibition will feature a series of books "Library of World Literature", which not only summarized in 200 volumes the literary heritage of previous generations of interpreters, but also for the first time introduced the works of many foreign writers in Russian.

Among the exhibits - the research of historians, theorists and practitioners of translation, as well as classic textbooks for students of philology.

The exhibition will run until November 2.
