Birthday anniversary of historian Dmitry N. Bantysh-Kamensky
5 (16) November 1788, in Moscow, was born Dmitry N. Bantysh-Kamensky, historian, archaeographer, collector of historical documents, writer, one of the founders of the scientific source study in the national historiography.
Dmitry came from a noble family of Bantysh, natives of Moldavia principalities, relatives of the lord's kin of Kantemirov, and was the son of the historian, archivist and archeographer, Nikolai Bantysh- Kamensky.
Having been educated at home, in 1800 Dmitry was appointed a cadet in the Moscow Archive of Foreign Affairs, where his father was manager of the archive. Being in service, Dmitry was sent to the Balkans and after the trip he published his travel notes "Journey to Moldavia, Wallachia and Serbia."
In 1814, after the death of his father, Dmitry entered the service at the Board of Foreign Affairs and moved to St. Petersburg. He was then appointed officer on special assignments, and then the office manager of the military governor of Little Russia (Ukraine) Prince N. G. Repnin, on the instructions of whom, he wrote "The History of Little Russia, from its annexation to the Russian state to the abolishment of the hetmanate, with a general introduction, the attachment of materials and portraits." Serving in Poltava, he gathered a rich collection of historical sources about the past of Ukraine from ancient times to the annexation to Russia.
In the spring of 1825 Dmitry was appointed governor of Tobolsk. In this post, he made a lot for the improvement of the city, improving the life of the local natives and exiles, for the industrial development of the region. However, due to bureaucratic intrigues, in 1828 Dmitry fell under senate investigation and was rehabilitated only in 1834.
In 1836 Bantysh-Kamensky was appointed governor of Vilna province, helped to improve charitable institutions and hospitals, the urban environment. Later Dmitry was withdrawn from there, and appointed a member of the Council of the Ministry of Interior and the Department of principalities. And in 1841 he was granted the tank of secret adviser.
