
Television space bridge St. Petersburg – Kazan linked participants of the 36th UNESCO session and their young colleagues
July 3, 2012 as part of the 36th session of UNESCO World Heritage Committee taking place in St. Petersburg these days, the Presidential Library hosted a teleconference between the members of the organization and their colleagues from the Youth Model World Heritage Committee.
Youth Model Committee is a joint initiative of Russia and UNESCO, and its first forum is held in the capital of Tatarstan. M. S. Shaimiev, State Advisor to the Republic of Tatarstan, welcomed the participants of the 36th Session of the World Heritage Committee from Kazan, on behalf of the Republic of Tatarstan He noted that the world needs UNESCO - the organization that promotes the strengthening of international dialogue and understanding.
S. M. Shaimiev expressed hope that by uniting the efforts of various countries, representatives of different nationalities and religions, people of different ages and with different experience, it is possible to achieve a lot. Those gathered in St. Petersburg and Kazan have the same goal - to preserve and promote the world heritage, he said.
The young activists were greeted by the chairman of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, E. V. Mitrofanova. She said that the session is in operation, and mentioned that one of the most tragic moments was the destruction of the temple complex of Timbuktu (Mali). Mausoleums of Mali were listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in danger, and the next day, these facilities were destroyed by the radical Islamists.
In her address the Chairman of the World Heritage Committee said that life requires finding a balance between maintaining cultural traditions and securing of socio-economic progress. E. V. Mitrofanova stressed that the Youth Model Committee is intended to provide the continuity of generations which is so important to achieve this goal.
During the space bridge, representatives of the Youth Forum had an opportunity to directly address issues of interest to the members of UNESCO, present in the multimedia hall of the Presidential Library.
In the second part of the evening, the members of the UNESCO were proposed a concert by the National Song and Dance Ensemble of the Republic of Tatarstan at the hall of the Presidential Library.
International Youth Forum in Kazan will run until July 9. It is attended by undergraduate and graduate students from more than 20 countries, members of the Committee, specializing in the conservation of World Heritage. Meetings of the 36th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in St. Petersburg will be last until July 6.
