The first three actions take place in 1812. The fourth act - in 1815. The play begins with a description of the charges of the brothers François and Jane Archet to the war. The scene is a farmhouse in France. The second action takes place there in October 1812. François deserted from the army and hides in the mountains near the village. He is in love with the bride of his brother Bertha. The third act takes place in November 1812 in Russia, near Berezena. The French troops are breaking up, the soldiers remember fighting and talking about the horrors of the war. Jeanne is seriously wounded. The 4th action takes place in 1815 in France, in the house of Arche. Describes the family drama of François, Bert, and Jean who returned from the war, who lost both hands .
