The study of the famous Russian historian Vasily Osipovich Klyuchevsky (16.01.1841 - 12.05.1911) is devoted to one of the least developed themes in Russian historical science XIX at. - the establishment of the degree of reliability of information, which the Lives of ancient Russian saints XI - early XVII century. To study the Life of V.O. Kluchevsky drew a wide range of sources, including unpublished manuscript and archival materials. In these sources, the researcher hoped to find a new material enriched with reliable facts to study the participation of ancient Russian monasteries in the colonization of North-Eastern Russia. This work became his master's thesis, which VO Klyuchevsky brilliantly defended at the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University in 1871. The researcher devoted much attention to the search for sources, samples, techniques and forms for creating the Lives of Old Russian Saints. A very critical approach to their study, which was not inherent in the church historical historiography of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was posed by the work of VO Kliuchevskii. This determined the further scientific approach of researchers in studying the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. Despite the vivid characteristics of different aspects of the Old Russian spiritual and secular life, VO Klyuchevsky remained a skeptic in the matter of bringing the Lives of the Old Russian saints as a historical source
