900th anniversary of Staraya Ladoga to be celebrated at the Presidential Library

June 3, 2016 at 13.00 in the Presidential Library will be held the International scientific-practical conference "Cultural and historical value of Staraya Ladoga". The event is timed to anniversaries - the 900th anniversary of the Ladoga Fortress and Cathedral of the Assumption of the Holy Dormition nunnery.

The conference is organized by the Committee on Culture of the Government of the Leningrad region, the Staraya Ladoga historical, architectural and archaeological museum with the participation of the Presidential Library, the Tikhvin diocese and the Institute of History of Material Culture of RAS.  

Special attention conference participants give to the subject of history, archeology and restoration of the Ladoga fortress and urban monumental church architecture. There will be delivered presentations on the history of the fortress of mayor Paul 1114-1116, study and restoration of the Assumption Cathedral of the Holy Dormition nunnery, links of Nizhny Volkhov area and Novgorod in the Viking Age, features of buildings walls of Clement tower in the XVII century, new archaeological discoveries in the territory of the Ladoga Fortress and etc.  

The conference will provide the film by Presidential Library’s director Tatyana Diakonova "Capital city", which tells about the birth of statehood on Russian land. The film represents the point of view of the main expert on the study of the territory of Staraya Ladoga Anatoly Kirpichnikov that Staraya Ladoga is "the ancient capital of the Northern Rus'.   

The conference will be attended by members of research institutes and museums, university students and teachers, lovers of old Russian history, as well as representatives of the clergy.

Conference "Cultural and historical value of Staraya Ladoga" will be a significant event in the cultural and scientific world of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region. The event will allow the public to pay attention to the problems of study and preservation of cultural and historical heritage of Staraya Ladoga and ancient Rus’. 

The conference will be broadcast live at the Presidential Library website, beginning of the broadcast - at 13.00 Moscow time.
