Anniversary readings, dedicated to the memory of Mikhail Muravyov, to be held in the Presidential Library

October 28, 2016 at 10:00 at the Presidential Library will be held anniversary scientific readings "In the Service of the Fatherland: to the memory of Mikhail Nikolayevich Muravyov (1796-1866)". They will be attended by scientists, representatives of libraries, archives, museums, the Russian Orthodox Church, graduate and undergraduate students. The event will be broadcast online at the Presidential Library website, the section "Live broadcasts".

Anniversary scientific readings are timed to the 220th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Muravyov and the 150th anniversary of his death. The participants will discuss the contribution of the outstanding Russian statesman and military leader, hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, Mikhail Muravyov to the development of the Russian Empire. Mikhail Nikolaevich, being skillful and humane administrator, fought corruption in a number of provinces, developed land surveying business, stood at the origins of the Russian Geographical Society, has developed many nation-wide reforms in the economy, culture and education, he has been a staunch defender of orthodoxy. He also developed a project of the peasant reform, devoid of most of the shortcomings adopted in 1861.  

As part of the Scientific Conference will be featured presentations on the role of Mikhail Muravyov in the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1863, his reforms in the Northwest region of the Russian Empire (1863-1865). Particular attention will be paid to the Muravyov’s contribution to the development of topographic, geodesic and cartographic knowledge in Russia, his bills to reform the Russian agrarian society (1861).

To the jubilee events the Presidential Library will present at its website in the open access the collection of electronic copies of unique archival materials and documents that reveal the multifaceted personality of Count Muravyov, his reform activity.
