The Presidential Library and the “Polar Convoy” are inviting to the “Don’t forget Izhora!” film screening.

28 February 2017

On February 28, 2017, at 4 pm the Cinema Club of the Presidential Library invites to “Don’t forget Izhora!” directed by Alexander Sorokin movie screening and debating.

The movie tells about the feat accomplished by the sailors of Soviet wood cargo vessel named “Izhora” in March 1942, when at the expense of their lives, violating a requirement of radio silence, shotgun of the German squadron led by the “Tirpitz” battleship our sailors went on the air and warned two allied convoys and protecting them ships escort about the impending danger. A clause of an absolute secrecy of carefully planned by the Germans operation was broken, the hundreds of thousands of tons of precious military cargos, so necessary to the Red Army, leading heavy defensive engagements, were saved.

Circumstances of “Izhora’s” battle with the German squadron remained unknown for a long time, it was believed that the entire crew fell. Nobody knew that the vessel’s chief mate Nikolay Adaev survived, martyred in Nazi captivity as a member of the underground. He asked his camp fellow Lev Nekipelov, who made it to Victory, to tell about the “Izhora” feat, but unfortunately, the words of the former prisoner have never been heard. The book of German researcher Norbert Klapdor, which included the photographs and memories of a direct participant in this fight Jorgen Brunc, artillery officer of the destroyer “Friedrich Inn,” became new convincing evidence of heroism of the Soviet sailors.

Veterans of the Arctic Convoys and their descendants, members of the “Polar convoy” St. Petersburg public organization set a goal to grant wide public acceptance of the “Izhora” heroes’ deed, especially in St. Petersburg, which the vessel was attributed to and where grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Nikolay Adaev and many of his friends live. Featured at the Cinema Club movie will help to restore a justice. And the names of the “Izhora” seamen will be remaining in memory of our nation just like the names of 28 Panfilov heroes and other famous defenders of our homeland.

The meeting will be held in the multimedia hall of the Presidential Library at 3 Senate Square, St. Petersburg, RF 190000.
