“The feature length Herman” movie premiere and “German. Beyond the camera” presentation of the book of Alexander Pozdnyakov will take place in the Presidential Library

29 March 2017

A screening of the movie of Alexander Pozdnyakov entitled “Herman. Beyond the camera” and the presentation of “The feature length Herman” book by the same author will take place on March 29, 2017, at 4 pm in the Cinema Club of the Presidential Library.

Aleksei German senior stands alone in the history of Russian cinematograph: both by his true commitment to black and white stylistics, and by the complexity of the raised problems. His films made a long way to their audience: at the beginning because of their ban, remaining “at the shelf” and gathering dust with the best Soviet-era movies’ reels. Later - due to over-demanding to himself and his filmproductionmates (“Hard to be God” was filming for 15 years). An appointment with the audience, finally, took its place, and how! With sold outs on “My friend Ivan Lapshin” and “Trial on the Road” (people bought tickets in advance, as in the best times of the Soviet cinema). On there demand was a truth about the war, and people did not make fan on the actor Yuri Nikulin, who played the main role in the “20 days without war” movie.

In the basis of both the movie and the book of the famous St. Petersburg based documentary director, cinematographer and cultural studies scholar Alexander Pozdnyakov is the production material from the video interview that he had taken with the filmmaker, the articles and author’s interviews with Alexei Herman for newspapers from different years and other chronicle documents. Accumulating his material, Pozdnyakov talked with Herman's relatives, colleagues and friends. Rare photographs from the family archive, drafts and preliminary papers, storyboards for the movies, caricatures are released for the first time in this book.

Both the book and the film-portrait, dedicated to Aleksei German senior, let viewers into his inner world, where even one of his colleagues or the close ones was allowed. That's why these two documentary works by Alexander Pozdnyakov are so valuable.

The meeting of the Cinema Club will take place in the multimedia hall at the premises the Presidential Library at 3 Senat Square, St. Petersburg, RF 190000.
