The process of photochrome was invented in the 1880s by Hans Jakob Schmidt, an employee of the Swiss firm OG Fusli. Color prints were made by combined photo / lithographic technique. To introduce this process into the production process, the same-named joint stock company "Photochrom Zürich" (Photogrom Zürich AG), which still operates today, was created. The process of photochromes became very popular in the 1890s. Especially popular were photochromic reproductions of images of cities and landscapes, which were sold as postcards. |
