On the front side under the picture in the lower field are two quotations by NV Gogol: "With a bitter word I will laugh ... "; "We need to write in Russian, we must strive for the support and consolidation of one language for all native tribes to us ... For Russians there must be a single shrine - Pushkin's language ...".

On the card is a reproduction of a portrait of Nikolai Gogol, painted by Russian artist Fyodor Antonovich Moller, executed in 1841. The portrait was ordered to the painter in Italy for the mother by Gogol himself. The writer specially prepared for the sessions of portraying: he was looking for a suit, he chose a pose and an expression. The portrait was acquired by P. Tretyakov for his portrait gallery of "people, dear nation" .
