The dictionary was printed in an amount of 500 copies, but according to the instructions of Catherine II, who considered it only preliminary experience, was not widely disseminated. Only 40 copies of the total circulation were allowed to the bookseller Weitbrecht to go on sale.
"The foreword from the publisher" was signed by PS Pallas.
When compiling the dictionary, materials collected by LI Buckmeister were used. The words in the Tatar, Chuvash, Mordovian and Cheremiss languages were collected under the leadership of Damaskin (Semenov-Rudnev).

The basis of the dictionary was composed of materials received from Russian governors, Russian envoys at foreign courtyards and from foreign scientists, according to a program that was developed by PS Pallas in 1785. To facilitate the work, a sample was sent out in French, published in Petersburg in 1786: Modele du vocabulaire qui doit servir a la comparaison de toutes les langues.
