History and Culture: Exhibition “Diverse Siberia” presented in Moscow

15 February 2023

At the Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Sergei Andriyaka Academy of Watercolours and Fine Arts, the Novosibirsk State Art Museum for the first time presents one of the most interesting and significant parts of its collections – the works of Siberian painters of the 20th century.

The exhibition continues the good tradition of fruitful cooperation between the Academy of Watercolours and Fine Arts and the Novosibirsk Art Museum. In 2022, Novosibirsk hosted a collection of works by People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Rector of the Academy of Watercolours and Fine Arts Sergei Nikolayevich Andriyaka and his students, which became a bright and notable event in the cultural life of Novosibirsk.

The exhibition Diverse Siberia is a large-scale project both in terms of the level of works presented and the fact that they left Novosibirsk Region for the first time.

The Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Sergei Andriyaka Academy of Watercolours and Fine Arts became the second metropolitan venue hosting a collection from Siberia: in December 2022, the Tapan Museum in Moscow held the successful opening of an exhibition that for the first time introduced the Moscow audience to the best works from the heritage of famous artists of Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Omsk, Gorno-Altaysk, Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk, who worked in the 20th century. They include the first professional painter of Altai Grigory Gurkin (Choros), the original Altai master Nikolai Chevalkov, painters Alexey Voshchakin, Andrey Nikulin, Nikolai Andreyev, who played a huge role in the artistic life of Siberia and in the formation of a kind of “Siberian style” in the visual arts.

The masters presented at the exhibition belong to different generations, historical and cultural eras, they worked in various genres and stylistic manners. However, they are united by one big theme to which they devoted their creativity – the theme of Siberia. The collection of the Novosibirsk State Art Museum reveals to visitors the depth and versatility of Siberian fine art. The exhibition Diverse Siberia showcases the work of artists from all over Siberia and demonstrates the important role of Novosibirsk as the leading cultural centre of the Siberian Federal District.

The exhibition will run until March 26, 2023.
