Society and Book Culture: Opening of the permanent exposition "The Cabinet of the Artist's Book" in the Hermitage

11 July 2017

The State Hermitage Museum (Saint-Petersburg) on July 11, 2017 hosts a permanent exhibition entitled "The Cabinet of the Artist's Book".

The "Book of the Artist" is a special type of publication that has little in common with a mass illustrated book. Typically, this is a book, illustrated with original prints (lithographs, xylographs, engravings on metal), hand-picked by a specially selected font, printed on high-quality hand-made paper, very limited (on average about 300 copies). This is a rare, elite bibliophile edition. But first of all this is the work of the artist - painter, sculptor, graphic artist - a work belonging to the world of "great art" and therefore occupying a full place in the museum exposition.

For the first time in the Hermitage, it was possible to create a permanent exhibition, where all the leading masters of the livre d'artiste of the first half and the middle of the XX century are represented.
