The identity and deeds of Nikolay Chernyshevsky

“I don’t have a single drop of artistic talent… I write novels, similarly to that workman hitting rocks on the highway”, Nikolay Chernyshevsky said about himself. Lenin called him a “great Russian writer”, “revolutionary democrat”, “genius visionary”. For contemporary readers, he is a man schematically depicted by Soviet textbooks as a revolutionary-minded person, who asked an “eternal” question in his most famous work – What Is to Be Done?. To it, he even tried to give an answer.

By the beginning of 1700 in Europe anti-Sweden coalition called the Northern Alliance had formed. It included Russia (Peter I), Denmark (Frederick IV), Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Saxony (Augustus II the Strong).

December 12, 2021 marks the 255th anniversary of the birth of Nikolay Karamzin, a Russian historian, the greatest writer of the era of sentimentalism, publicist. The Presidential Library’s portal features the electronic collection Nikolay Karamzin (1766–1826), which includes studies, essays and archival documents, his own works on the history of the Russian state, as well as individual letters and notes, new editions and video lectures.

The theme of the first meeting, timed to the centennial of the Revolution of 1917 in Russia, was a movie review "If there was an assault on the Winter palace?". Participants of the meeting, students of Saint-Petersburg universities, not only looked at the different versions of the key event of 1917, shot by the masters of the national cinema, but also discussed them...

This is the final video lecture which is held as part of the cycle dedicated to the Year of the Russian Language as the Language of Interethnic Communication in the CIS countries. The project was developed by the Presidential Library in order to tell about topical issues of Russian studies and the problems of the development of the Russian language in the world.

On February 12, 2020, at 10 a.m., the Presidential Library will host a thematic webinar “The Main Battles of the Northern War”, focusing on the materials which spotlight the main battles and the main events of the military conflict between Sweden and the coalition of Northern European states for the right to own Baltic lands, which lasted from 1700 until 1721 and went down in history as the Northern War or the Great Northern War.
