Robert Hynam (1737-1817), an English mechanic, Corresponding Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Honorary Member of Moscow University. He worked and died in St. Petersburg.

Pyotr Shelekhov (1741-1804), a Court Councillor, cartographer of the Main Directorate of Schools. Until 1793 he was a naval officer and retired as Second Major. Then he began to serve in the Geographical Department under the Commission for the Schools Establishment (he used to work there even before his retirement). Soon he headed a Geographical Expedition (the former department for creating land maps and globes). In 1804 he was appointed Chief Geographer but died before taking this post.
